Chas Newby played bass guitar with The Beatles for four gigs in December 1960 when they returned from Hamburg the first time. Stuart Sutcliffe, their original bass guitarist, had stayed behind in Germany. Chas became The Beatles first left-handed bassist and was offered the role full time, but decided to continue his studies.

In 2016 Chas Newby joined The Quarry Men who had reformed years earlier, and stayed with them until his death in 2023.
