Formed in Mansfield as Johnny Theakstone and the Beat Boys in the late 1950s.
In 1960, the group, who by now were known as Johnny Theakstone and the Tremeloes, recorded a demo tape using a tape recorder set up in a dance hall while they played live into it. They mailed it in to the BBC using the name Shane Fenton and the Beat Boys with the hope of being picked to appear on radio. While awaiting a reply from the BBC, the band's 17-year-old singer Johnny Theakstone, died as a result of the rheumatic fever he had suffered in childhood. The rest of the band decided to break up, but then unexpectedly received a letter via Johnny's parents a few weeks later from the BBC inviting them to come to London to do an insert for BBC Light Programme's 'Saturday Club'. Theakstone's mother asked the band to reform, and asked Jewry, who had been singing with the band to give Johnny a break during gigs, to become the new full time lead singer. Shane Fenton and the Beat Boys went to London and recorded for Saturday Club and eventually went on to do several more, changing their name to Shane Fenton and the Fentones. This led to a recording contract with EMI's Parlophone label and also lots of gigs up and down the country including a tour with Larry Parnes' The Big Star Show of 1962'.

Graham Squires was an early member.
Georgie Rodda played drums from around April 1962 to April 1963.
Bobby Elliott played drums in 1963 before joining The Hollies full time.
Don Burrell played drums from September 1963 to 1965.
Ginger Baker took over drumming duties in 1965 just before The Fentones disbanded. He would later play for Cream.
Managed by Tommy Sanderson.
The Fentones also released two instrumental singles in 1962 without Shane Fenton. Both made the lower reaches of the charts.
Shane Fenton parted company with The Fentones in 1963. The Fentones continued on for another two years before disbanding in 1965.
Shane Fenton briefly went solo before turning to artist management.
Shane Fenton later became Alvin Stardust and had massive success in the 1970s and early 1980s. He then turned to musical theatre.
Jerry Wilcock later taught guitar to children and became a bus driver.
